Lived Experience Career Development
We launched the Lived Experience Career Development Programme in November 2023 with partners across the sector.
"Lived experience" means knowing what it's like to seek safety in a new country. This programme supports staff and volunteers who have been through the asylum process to grow and succeed in their careers, both at the Refugee Council and beyond.
It also aims to promote diverse leadership in the refugee support sector.
Our Research
We created this initiative after eight months of research across the wider charity sector. Our study revealed the different barriers refugees face when growing their careers and what we can do about it.
These barriers exist on three levels: systemic, organisational and individual.
They include a hostile societal backdrop, structural racism, lack of strong line management and inclusive recruitment, fixed mindsets and lack of confidence. You can read an overview of our research here.
The LECD Programme
We have designed a programme of pilot projects to test different ways to overcome and break down these barriers. The pilots will focus on testing ideas first and then building sustainable practices with the power to effect real change. The pilots will work towards three primary outcomes:
Moving towards embedded anti-racism on a systemic, sector-wide level.
Improving support systems through strong line management and inclusive, accountable recruitment
Building individual skills, confidence, and aspirations.
Our Commitment
The LECD Programme is committed to putting wellbeing first, sharing great practice and resources, and being honest about what we learn.
