The Refugee Council launches Christmas Big Give Campaign

This week the Refugee Council launched our Christmas Big Give Campaign. This is a unique chance to double the impact of your donation. Any donation made via Big Give’s website between midday on 3 December and midday on 10 December 2024 will be match funded by our pledgers.  You can find our page and donate here.

People like me need people like you!

– Dagi, 18, Youth Services Client.

Funds raised during the campaign will go towards our Youth Services which support young people seeking asylum. Young refugees usually arrive alone, without adult family members, leaving them vulnerable.

We help them to adjust to their new lives in the UK after fleeing conflict, violence, or persecution.

Understandably, this may have been a traumatic journey, and we offer therapy sessions where they can develop coping mechanisms and process their experiences.

Our life skills sessions, allow young people to meet others going through the same process and learn things such as cooking, budgeting, and about life the UK. We offer the chance to improve their English in an informal setting and support in finding interpreters, legal advice, and direct them to services which can help in the tracing of separated family members.

Your donation can help us make a difference in the lives of young refugees (To respect and protect privacy, an actor has been used in these photographs) Your donation can help us make a difference in the lives of young refugees (To respect and protect privacy, an actor has been used in these photographs)

Ultimately, we ensure they have the tools to build new skills and confidence so they can lead fulfilling lives in their new homes.

My dream was to have a home, an education, but when I arrived here it wasn’t like that

– Ahmad, 16, from Afghanistan. Age Disputes Client

There are cases of children being identified as adults when they first arrive to the UK. This means they are placed in adult accommodation where they may have to share a room with an adult, leaving them isolated and vulnerable.

As they are deemed adults, they are unable to attend school, and do not understand how to contest their age decisions.

Our team provide specialist advice for age disputed children to help them gain legal representation and challenge their age decisions.

We ensure they are placed in appropriate accommodation, with people their own age, so they have a safe place to call home.

This winter, consider making a donation to Refugee Council’s Christmas Big Give Campaign. Your contribution would be doubled by Big Give allowing us to help more young people like Ahmad and Dagi.■

* Any financial contribution, from you, your organisation or company or from your colleagues and or staff team, made via our campaign page at the Big Give will be doubled (up to the Big Give’s cap of £70,000)
