Mohamad is a qualified lawyer and refugee from the Middle East. Since seeking safety in Britain, Mohamad has struggled to find suitable work, so came to our Refugees into Jobs programme for support and guidance. This is his story.
A couple of years ago I was working in a restaurant. It wasn’t a job I ever wanted to do but I had to do it in order to survive. It was long hours, minimum wage and really stressful.
I desperately wanted to leave. One day I was looking for help and support on the internet and I discovered Refugee Council’s Refugees into Jobs programme.
At the Refugee Council I met amazing people like Bahar and Martine and others. They mainly helped me with the techniques of how to the search for a job, write my CV in a professional way and get through interviews. They really boosted my confidence.
They also helped me get a place on King’s College’s summer school programme studying law. It was a dream to be able to study at such a reputable institution; I learned so much at King’s and met some amazing students and staff.
Now I’m working for Barclays Bank; one of the biggest banks in Europe; and I’m hoping to go back to university to study for a degree in law.
I’m so grateful for all of the help and support the Refugee Council gave me; it’s helped me a lot to have a promising future.
My journey hasn’t been smooth; it was full of hard times and rejections but if you work hard and believe in yourself you can achieve your goals. You should never let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do.
