We help new refugees access education, employment or voluntary work through our Refugees into Jobs programme. Between August and October this year alone, we supported 24 refugees into employment.
Christine, a refugee from Uganda, recently wrote to us to thank us for our support. This is her story.
When I was first referred to the Refugee Council, I was homeless and severely depressed. With the support of Refugees into Jobs, I managed to find my first job in cleaning at a college. The Refugee Council also helped me to find accommodation and I was referred to their therapeutic team for further support.
After I settled in my studio flat, I contacted Refugees into Jobs again and they helped me to enrol for a ‘Pathway to Care’ course at City Lit.
After I completed the course, they put me in touch with an employer for an interview. I was successful and started working in a nursing home as a care assistant. I was over the moon!
My life has changed completely since I have joined the Refugees into Jobs programme; my advisor Wendy continuously supported me from filling applications to teaching me IT skills.
I’m very grateful for their support.
