Phew, it has been a busy week at Labour Conference. On Tuesday evening The Children’s Society organised a thought provoking meeting about children who get caught up in the UK’s complicated and intimidating asylum system.
The Refugee Children’s Consortium want to see a system that views refugee children as children first and refugees second. Seems like a humane and sensible approach to me. Shami Chakrabarti, amongst others spoke passionately for the campaign.
Wednesday night was the Conference highlight for us at the Refugee Council. The Still Human Still Here coalition premiered Amnesty’s new film into destitution – a moving and powerful 12-minute film produced by Nick Broomfield.
Around 80 activists came to the premiere, and Jon Cruddas and film director Marc Hoeferlin gave inspiring speeches in support of the campaign. The film will be available on the Amnesty website and is a must-see. Write to your MP and ask them to take a look at it too – it explains the issue and shows the real impact of current government policy better than any briefing that I have come across.
And the event even got a friendly write-up on the Guardian website.
