Eva had limited English and felt very isolated. Advisers on our Advice Project in Barnsley gave her a bus pass so she could afford to travel to our weekly women’s group where she was able to make friends and take her pick from donated clothes for herself and her baby.
We signed her up for English classes and also encouraged her to sign up for the Free Thinking Programme at Northern College, a course for survivors of trafficking, to help increase her confidence and learn about life in the UK.
Over the past six months Eva has flourished, and now helps newcomers to settle at the Women’s Group. She is incredibly proud of herself. Her young child is visibly more content, sociable and independent. Eva continues to attend group activities and is awaiting the outcome of her asylum claim.

For 70 years, the UK has had a proud history of welcoming refugees. Now the UK government is seeking to destroy this tradition.
