2024 was the deadliest year on record for Channel crossings, with at least 69 people losing their lives attempting the dangerous journey to the UK. This figure is higher than the total number of recorded deaths between 2019 and 2023.
Deaths in the Channel: What Needs to Change examines the factors that have made crossings even more deadly, including the impact of enforcement measures aimed at disrupting smuggling gangs. It highlights how the use of overcrowded and flimsy boats, combined with the lack of effective search and rescue efforts, have put more lives at risk.
The report outlines key recommendations for the Government:
- Publish quarterly, transparent data on Channel deaths jointly with the French government.
- Improve search and rescue operations and increase funding focused on saving lives.
- Expand safe and legal routes to the UK, including resettlement, family reunion, and piloting a refugee visa scheme.
