2024 Theme: Our Home
The theme for Refugee Week 2024 is Our Home. Home can be a place of refuge, a feeling, or a state of mind. It can be found in smells, tastes, and sounds. From the clothes we wear to the words we grew up with. It’s in food, music, and arts. It’s in our cultures and in our landscapes.
Everyone should have a place to call home, but for many of the people we work with at Refugee Council this is far from guaranteed. Newly recognised refugees in the UK are given a notice period of just 28 days (known as the ‘move-on’ process) to leave their accommodation, making it very challenging to secure housing and financial support, and placing unnecessary pressures on local authority homelessness services.
We are calling for the next Government to extend the move-on period to at least 56 days, giving people who are granted refugee status more time to find a home and begin rebuilding their lives in the UK.
Renting a home to refugees
Our Home can be a place where we extend hospitality to others. We work with landlords and refugees through our Private Rented Scheme to help people find a secure and sustainable place to rent and call home.
