Health Access for Refugees (HARP)

What is this service?

HARP helps refugees to talk about their health. We help refugees to understand healthcare in the UK.

We help refugees with:

  • Weekly drop-in sessions.
  • Workshops about the National Health Service (NHS).
  • Accessing:
    • General practitioners (GPs)
    • Midwives
    • Hospitals
    • Dentists
    • Other health care.
  • Accessing:
    • Mental health care
    • Emotional support
    • Social care services.
  • Wellbeing activities.
  • Fitness
  • Sessions on different health topics.
  • Language support.
  • Opportunities to become HARP volunteers.  This means refugees can support others.
  • Becoming Experts by Experience with health professionals.

Become a volunteer and:

  • Get to know people from other cultures.
  • Help them access health services.
  • Get training and mentoring.
  • Develop your skills.
  • Get peer support meeting and supervision.
  • Gain valuable work experience within the Refugee Council.
  • Get networking opportunities.

We help practitioners with awareness raising for:

  • GP practices
  • Medical and other students
  • Receptionists
  • Mental health teams
  • Other health practitioners

We also offer healthcare professionals the chance to hear from our Experts by Experience. They give insight into:

  • Seeking asylum in the UK
  • Their experience of overcoming health inequalities
  • The needs of their peers

Can I use this service?

We focus on people seeking asylum who are living in hotels in:

  • Wakefield
  • Hull and East Yorkshire
  • Sheffield
  • Rotherham

We can sometimes help refugees living elsewhere. This is only in the local authority areas listed above.
