Community Development Worker- Sheffield (JR457)

The Organisation

The Refugee Council is one of the leading organisations in the UK working with asylum seekers and refugees. We provide advice and assistance across a wide range of issues. These include helping asylum seekers through the asylum system, accessing housing, welfare, benefits, health, education and employment. Our teams work with relevant agencies such as the Home Office, Local Authorities, Hosing providers, UKBA, Health and Mental Health providers, and Legal Service Providers. The Refugee Council has agreed to work in partnership with Migration Yorkshire and Doncaster and Rotherham Local Authorities to deliver the wraparound support for refugees on the Homes for Ukraine programme. The model of support is as follows:

  • Integration support for new arrivals
  • Coordinating multiagency weekly drop-ins
  • Ongoing support for complex case clients beyond 12 months
  • Intensive support with securing permanent housing (including property searches, joint viewings, tenancy support)
  • Reporting critical incidents and intensive support for affected families – DV, safeguarding, self-harm, hate crime.
  • Group briefings and community development activities
  • Support with applications for visa extensions
  • Promoting volunteering and referrals into employment support services

The post holder will be working from the Sheffield office covering Doncaster and Rotherham and will report to the South Yorkshire Resettlement Homes for Ukraine Coordinator.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To assist resettled refugees to develop and access social, cultural, recreational and other local community activities and opportunities.
  2. To develop and coordinate initiatives that promote links between resettled refugees and the wider community (e.g. English conversation clubs, women’s groups)
  3. To organise and facilitate group briefing activities that promote the integration needs of Homes for Ukraine clients (Briefing topics may include: debt, utilities, cost of living, UK education system, health services, visa extensions)
  4. To enable newly arrived refugees to identify their needs and aspirations and collaborate with the resettlement workers to play an active role in helping to fulfilling them.
